Remembering Jo Cox

Three years ago on 16 June 2016, Jo Cox – The MP for Batley and Spen – was killed.

The killing was by a neo-Nazi in a politically motivated attack during the EU referendum campaign.

A family statement tweeted by the Jo Cox Foundation, set up in her memory, said:

“We will be spending the day together privately as a family and remembering all the goodness she brought to our world and not the way she was taken from it.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted “we miss her commitment to fighting injustice and her conviction that a better world is possible”.

Prime Minister Theresa May said the West Yorkshire MP was an “inspirational MP, campaigner and humanitarian”.

More in Common’ Memorial Plague

To mark the first anniversary of her death a coat of arms was been unveiled in Parliament by her two children. The memorial plaque featuring a coat of arms – designed by Cuillin, six, and Lejla, four – was installed in the Commons chamber. It was part of a ‘Family Day’ as MPs and staff were encouraged to bring their children into the chamber.

The design of the plaque was inspired by Mrs Cox’s maiden speech. It contains the line:

We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.

Events across the country will take place between 22 – 24 each June in memory of MP, under the banner – ‘The Great Get Together’.
