We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Our children and our nations face grave irrecoverable risk. Climate change can’t wait.
The planet is in ecological crisis. We are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event this planet has experienced. Scientists believe we may have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown.
The earth’s atmosphere is already over 1°C warmer than pre-industrial levels. The chances of staying below the 2°C warming agreed upon in the Paris Agreement are tiny.
Recent projections show we are on course for three degrees of warming and potentially much higher.
A US Government report on climate breakdown published in November 2018 states:
“The global average temperature is much higher and is rising more rapidly than anything modern civilization has experienced, and this warming trend can only be explained by human activities.”
As of now, not a single G20 country is meeting climate targets, according to research conducted by the Climate Transparency Organisation.
Children alive today will face unimaginable horrors as a result of floods, wildfires, extreme weather, crop failures and the inevitable breakdown of society, when the pressures are so great.
We are unprepared for the danger our future holds.
The time for denial is over – we know the truth about climate change and we know the truth about current biological annihilation.
It’s time to act like this truth is real.
What does living with this truth call on us to do?
Will you die knowing you did all you were able to?
In the UK and across the world, all types of people are grouping together to support Extinction Rebellion, a grassroots campaign to engage in civil disobedience to force urgent climate action. From blocking access to fracking sites to stopping traffic in polluted streets, the rebellion is fast gaining national attention.
